How to Get Around Without Speaking the Language

Don’t worry – even without knowing Bosnian, you can travel comfortably and connect with locals.

Many people in Bosnia speak at least basic English, especially younger generations and those working in tourism. Still, learning a few key phrases like “hello” (zdravo), “thank you” (hvala), and “how much?” (koliko?) will go a long way.

When communication gets tricky, use translation apps or show things visually – pointing to a map or showing a screenshot often works. Locals are generally kind and willing to help, even with a language barrier.

Menus, signs, and tourist brochures in cities are often bilingual, and Google Translate with your phone camera can help you understand signs or menus in real time. With a smile and patience, you’ll navigate the country just fine.
